Dorset Deaf Children's Society

Following on from the success of last year’s Fun Day the trustees decided to hold another Fun Day/Hog Roast at The Orangery in Merley, Wimborne. After some very dodgy weather forecasts the sun was shining at the start of what turned out to be a very hot day on Sunday 19th August. And just over two hundred hearing impaired children and young people and their families turned up for a great day of games and fun! This is the most people that have ever attended a DDCS event! 

 

As always the grounds of the Orangery were beautiful and included plenty for the children and adults to enjoy such as Badminton, Beach Volley Ball, Basketball, Mini Golf, Croquet, Petanque, Table Tennis, Giant Chess, Football Table, Climbing Net and a giant Connect Four. Christopher Poole of Castlefun once again very kindly lent us a Skittle Alley, Giant Jenga, and Snakes and Ladders. For the younger children DDCS also hired a selection of toys including a parachute, soft play, rockers and hula hoops. Children could have their face painted or their nails painted - which proved popular with the boys for some reason!

 

The annual skittle competition was held to see who could knock down the most skittles in three attempts with a prize for the adult and child who score the most. This year the adult winner was Laura Clarke with a score of 24 and the child winner was Amy Cannard with a score of 18. Wonder if anyone can beat those scores next year!

 

We also had a visit from Debbie Ravensdale our NDCS Family Officer who was on hand to chat to any families who may have any questions or concerns.

 

The Orangery creates a very secure environment for the children as the grounds are surrounded by a twelve foot wall and parents were able to sit, relax and chat to other families while the children played. This event attracts all ages so it was a great chance for families with very young children to meet older young people with a hearing loss.

 

What a glorious day with brilliant sunshine and families having fun!
