DONATIONS AND FUNDRAISING
Dorset Deaf Children's Society relies on donations and fundraising for funds. It has no paid officers and the Trustees work on a voluntary basis from their own homes. With very small overheads this means that every penny raised and donated is used directly for the benefit of deaf children in Dorset.
We could not provide the support for the deaf children and their families without these generous donations and fundraising.
If you make a donation or you have sponsors who are tax payers we can also Gift Aid your donation or sponsordhips which means more funds for DDCS!
Please contact Shirley on 01202 571089
for a Gift Aid Donation or Gift Aid Sponsorship form.

About four years ago, I started jogging as a hobby – I had always been a good swimmer & walker but had never been able to run. After having 3 children and having a busy home life, I thought I needed to do something on my own to enjoy a bit of peace and quiet. So I started by running 50 yards then walking 100. I usually did this early in the morning around 7am before the family got up. Soon I was running 100 & walking 50 – when I say running it was really a slow jog! Before long I was able to jog continuously for half an hour and feeling great.
Two years ago, a running club started in town, Purbeck Runners, who met on Wednesday evening at a pub & at weekends in the centre of town. Their training runs were split into groups and I was usually the slowest of the slow group but the comradeship was great and I entered races. As I got quicker and more newcomers joined, my results improved and soon I was doing 5K or 10K races and won a prize for attending the most club events. The encouragement I got from club members was amazing!
Last Spring I applied to join the London Marathon but didn’t get in. My disappointment was short lived as the club had 3 places allocated to them and they gave me one of them. So I started on a careful programme of training – not overdoing it but building up stamina and speed over the winter and in March completed a 20 mile race without a problem – I was ready for the great challenge!
The London Marathon was on Sunday, April 17th and I went up to London (with my daughter in tow) on the Saturday to register - staying with a friend for the night (& stoking up on pasta).
On the Sunday morning, with nerves jangling, I tubed to the start and before long we were off. It was difficult to keep running at the start, as there were so many people, over 30,000 runners, but I soon settled into my steady jog. The support from the crowds was amazing with bands playing & onlookers shouting my name (it was written on my vest). I didn’t see anyone famous but before long I was on Tower Bridge & passing the Tower of London. I was getting tired at the end but the careful training meant I never experienced “The Wall”. Buckingham Palace & the Mall appeared and I had finished in 5 hours, 23 minutes –fantastic!
After a couple of days rest, I had recovered & started light jogging again and wondering if I could get a place in next year’s race.
The best bit was that thanks to my colleagues at work and in local churches, I had raised £800 for DDCS.
I want to thank DDCS for all they have done for James and look forward to the next opportunity to raise money for this great organisation.
