DDCS CHRISTMAS PARTY 2010

On Saturday 27th November members from all over Dorset descended on St Marks Church Hall, Wallisdown, Bournemouth for the Dorset DCS annual Christmas Party. Over 170 (44 families) arrived to enjoy the afternoon which started with a delicious buffet including homemade cakes! The children kept themselves amused building and flying model aeroplanes, which gave the parents a chance to chat and enjoy the food.

After the buffet it was time for the entertainment and this year Jamie Jigsaw came along to amuse the children with his juggling and the children even had a chance to have a go!

Then, to much excitement, it was time for a very special visitor to arrive, Father Christmas! Assisted by his ‘elf’ helper in green tights, all the children received a gift to take home.

We were very lucky to have tickets donated for the Dick Whittington Pantomime being held at St Peters School De La Salle Theatre by one of our parents Simon Trueick (who is in the show). We held a raffle for these tickets and were able to raise funds.
Thanks to Simon for this donation.

Another parent, Mark Palmer, generously made a donation to cover the costs of the entertainer and also some of the other costs of the party. A big thank you to Mark and Janine.

It was great to see so many coming along to the party, meeting up with friends and making new ones and the children mixing and playing together. It was also great to welcome some our Teachers of the Deaf and our NDCS Family Officer.

We are all looking forward to the next party and let’s hope it will be just as successful as 2010!

LULWORTH CASTLE 2010

Spooky fun was had by all when the Dorset DCS visited Lulworth Castle for the day during the October half term. A hundred members enjoyed the day out and everyone got into the spirit of the event as most of the children, and some adults, dressed up in fancy dress which made the day even more enjoyable!

The weather which started off as dull and overcast decided to take part and the sun made a welcome appearance. The Children had fun with 'hunt the bat', gathered in the castle library for 'spooky tales’ and there was even a petting zoo, archery and a playground in the grounds of the castle for them to enjoy.

We all met up behind the castle for some group pictures and this meant that we were able to present the winner of the Jenny Barrett Junior Deaf Child Achievement Award with his Trophy and prize. Sebastian Harvey-Tkachuk was unable to attend the AGM when the winners were announced and he had no idea that he had won so it was a lovely surprise for him, well done Sebastian!

During the afternoon the fancy dress costumes were judged and Dorset DCS children won by a landslide winning first, second and third prize!! Well done to Jayleigh Tilley who won first prize, Lewis Charles who won second prize and Abbie Woods (sister of Sasha) who won third prize.

A great day was had by all!

PAULTONS PARK 2010

Our Big Summer family event this year was to Paultons Family Theme Park, Ower. The weather was kind to us and a total of 155 arrived bright and early. After issuing lots of tickets! we all got into the park by 11am. Dorset DCS paid for all deaf children and their carers and other family members benefited from greatly reduced rates. This meant that everyone had a really inexpensive day out.

Whilst younger members enjoyed the excitement of meeting Peppa Pig, the older children( and their parents/grandparents!) braved The Cobra and The Edge!! The wet play area also proved a hit in the sunshine! ensuring hearing aids and implants were all removed!

Everyone was free to explore and enjoy the park in their own time and many of us came together for a picnic and a chat at lunchtime.

MOORS VALLEY AND THE NDCS LISTENING BUS

APRIL 2010

Over the Easter break 86 members came along to Moors Valley Country Park, not only to enjoy a day out, but also to visit the NDCS LISTENING BUS! This was Dorset DCS first trip to Moors Valley and it was an added bonus that we were able to arrange for the Listening Bus to be there on the same day.

The weather held out and although not a brilliant sunny day it did not rain! Families were able to enjoy the Tree Top Trail and the Play Trail with its unique wooden play structures set along a 1 mile trail through the Forest and included the Giant Wood Ants Nest, Crocodile Crossing, Snake Pit and the new webs. The children had a great time in the play area, which is split in two with the Castle and Sandworks for the younger children and the Zip Wire, Space Net and Fort for the older ones. Some energetic families even bought their bicycles and cycled round the park. It really is a great day out for all the family.

The Listening Bus was open for visitors to experience some of the support technology available and also to talk and get advice from the NDCS staff, Louise and Damien. Families that wished to met up for a picnic lunch and afterwards everyone descended on Kingsmere Station for a ride on the miniature railway. There was much waving and screaming through the tunnels!

All in all it was another great day out for Dorset DCS!

WILD THING 2010

During the February half term DDCS invited all our members to Wild Thing in Adventure Wonderland. This has proved so popular in the past that it has become an annual event, and it proved popular again this year with 95 people coming along to enjoy the fun!

Unfortunately the weather was not as kind to us this year, but in between dodging the rain, our members were able to enjoy some of the rides in the park as well as Wild Thing which has an incredible 10,000 square feet of themed and interactive children’s’ play equipment indoors!

The children enjoyed the play equipment whilst the parents and carers were able to chat with each other and also make some new friends. It was a very busy day and the children went home suitably worn out!
We would like to thank Adventure Wonderland who very kindly let us use two of their party rooms again this year at no charge.

We look forward to next year!
